Thesis Title: Interactive performance for musicians with a hearing impairment

Jane Ginsborg
Juliet Goldbart

About

My research explores how musicians with hearing impairments access, rehearse and perform music, with a focus on interactive music-making.

This research supports the development of vibrotactile technology that transmits musical information in the form of vibrations perceived on the skin. This will be developed by team members at the School of Acoustics, University of Liverpool.

As well as undertaking interview and observations studies, I am helping to design, run and analyse experiments using the new technology that will establish fundamental parameters relating to the perception of music via vibro-tactile technology. These include establishing perception thresholds for felt pitch, loudness, rhythm, and chords and longitudinal training studies to explore to what extent learning can happen in this modality.

My thesis will evaluate the acceptability and effectiveness of the technological solution based on the experimental data.

The project is funded by the AHRC until May 2013.
